And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. Gen 22:1
In covenants, you do not take advantage of your covenant brother. However, if you are in need, he is obliged to bail you out or meet any demands according to the covenant.
Abraham saddled his ass and with two young men and his son Isaac proceeded to the mountains YHVH had shown him.
And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. Gen 22:7,8
It took Abraham three days to get to the place. Three days of opportunities to break the covenant or three days wherein he considered his son dead and burnt in the flames and received back to life.
At the very moment he lifted up the knife to slay him, after preparing the altar and tying up his son, YHVH intervened. YHVH provided a substitute. Abraham passed the test and YHVH said “on the mount of YHVH it shall be seen” implying in some distant future IYHVH will provide Himself a lamb on Calvary.
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. Heb 11:17-19
An incidence of great significance occurred in 2 Kings 3 when the Moabites were to be wiped out of existence. The king took his first born that should have reigned in his place and sacrificed him as a burnt offering on the wall. Read my book “The Power of Sacrifice”.
If the sacrifice of a heathen king brought salvation to him, his household and the rest of the nation, what will the sacrifice of YHVH’s Son do for us?
I would like us to look at this consideration:
Many today will not mind sacrificing their spouse because their marriage sucks and some will gladly sacrifice a bad child. How many will be willing to sacrifice themselves?
The basis of Christianity is sacrifice. Christianity without sacrifice is religion. Apostle Paul said “whether we live or die we are the Lord’s”
Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. Heb 13:12,13
This scripture has to do with the offering of the Red Heifer and the big question many Jewish people ask today is “If Jesus was the Lamb of God, why was He not crucified within the temple?” This will be discussed in a latter chapter “Jesus The Lamb and Red Heifer”
